One of the most beautiful metro systems in the world and it costs next to nothing to see (one metro ticket costs around €0,50). Opened in 1935 as the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union, the earlier stations showcase splendor and beautiful artworks. Reoccuring themes being Lenin, the Soviet star, hammer and sickle and farmers and their crop. But although these elements can be found in almost all of the artworks, each station has its own distinct style.

After 1950, the new stations were a lot more plain and toned down until more unique designs appeared again in the 1970s. For a slightly different experience of the metro, read the book Metro 2033 by Dmitry Alexeevich Glukhovsky.
