For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity. Where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women, and children, mainly Jews from various countries of Europe.
Auschwitz-Birkenau 1940-1945
I do not have many words for Auschwitz-Birkenau, except that you should see for yourself. Most people don’t return to this place, one visit is enough.
In Krakow, traces and witnesses of Jewish life are most prominent in the former Jewish quarter of Kasimierz, nowadays a young, alternative part of the city with lots of small cafés and bars.
Memorial to the victims of the Jewish ghetto, the chairs represent the furniture thrown out of windows and piled on this square as the Nazis were looking for gold (wedding rings etc.) hidden inside the furniture.
On a happier note, Krakow has a lovely Old Town that did not get destroyed during WWII (unlike Warsaw). The market square is pretty amazing with a market hall in the middle of the square. Great for people watching.
